They're Back...
...the hummingbirds have returned.
Every year on or near April 22, the hummingbirds
return.
We have been feeding them for several years and they
remember.
Stand on the porch and you will be buzzed as they fly
by in search of the feeder.
One year we happened upon one of their nests during
a hike up the mountain, a rare find.
Our feeder is up and full, ready for the start of
another season.
The tiny birds are a joy to watch. Their flying abilities
are a marvel to behold.
Our population of hummingbirds can consume as much
as a liter of food in 2 days.
Hummingbird food can be purchased at the store, but
that can get expensive after a while.
We make our own - is simple and much less costly.
If you would like to try your hand at the homemade
brand of hummingbird food
just follow the recipe below:
Hummingbird Food
4c of water
1c of sugar
Mix the above ingredients in a saucepan.
Bring to a rolling boil - boil for 5min.
Remove from the stove and allow solution to cool thoroughly.
Put a couple drops of red food coloring
(not absolutely necessary but is general practice)
in your feeder -
add the cooled sugar solution.
This recipe can be made in smaller or larger portions
as long as the water to sugar ratio remains the same.
If you make extra, be sure to store it in the refrigerator
- use as soon as possible.
Hang the feeder and enjoy watching the wee creatures.
